Capítulo 5: Um judeu pobre? / Chapter 5: A Jewish peddler?

Aqui, o autor nos dá uma noção da cidade onde Teo e Noa vivem. Ela é pequena e não tem mais que 10 mil habitantes. Como muitas cidades, esta não é muito diferente. Há um lado em que vivem os mais abastados, e outro, onde as coisas são mais precárias. Todas as casas têm aquecedores solares no telhado, afinal não se pode desperdiçar essa energia.
Onde vivem os moradores mais abastados é assim: as casas são de madeira, construídas como muitos chalés suiços, as sacadas são amplas, as janelas arredondas... Já do lado oposto, há um vale comprido, com uma estrada precária, ao longo da qual ficam as fábricas de cerâmica e metal, pequenas oficinas, garagens e cabanas.
Mas tanto o lado mais bonito da cidade como o menos privilegiado têm algo em comum: "o sol arde inclemente sobre tudo". 
O autor descreve algumas pessoas que andam por lá, mas um personagem em especial chama atenção: um mascate, ou seja, um vendedor ambulante." Ele é corcunda, usa óculos e um solidéu preto". Solidéu é o pequeno "chapéu" que os judeus usam, sabem?  Pois é, já viram um judeu pobre? Este trabalha num farol de trânsito: "[ele] caminha com uma bandeja presa ao pescoço por um barbante". Advinhem o que ele vende. Não, não são balas, ou flores..."Sobre a bandeja, sapos automáticos capazes de saltar apertando-se uma bola de borracha, piões, sabonetes, pentes, espuma de barbear e bisnagas de xampu". Curioso, não acham? O sapo recebe  significados diferentes, dependendo da cultura. Para algumas ele anuncia a chegada de chuva...

Here, the author gives us an idea of the city where Teo and Noa live. It is a small place and doesn´t have more than 10 thousand inhabitants. Like many cities, this is not very different. There is one side where the wealthy people live, and another, where things are tougher. All the houses have solar panels on the roof. After all, they can not waste this energy.
Where the wealthy residents live, things look this way: the houses are made by wood, built as many Swiss chalets, the balconies are large, they have rounded windows ... On the other side, there is a long valley, with a precarious road, along which there are factories of ceramic and metal, small workshops, garages and cabins. But the most beautiful side of the city and the less privileged have something in common "the merciless sun burns above everything." The author describes some people out there, but one character in particular calls our attention: a peddler. "He's hunchback, wears glasses and a black skullcap" . Skullcap is the little "hat" that Jews use, you know? Well, have you ever seen a poor Jew? This one works at traffic lights: "[He] walks with a tray attached to the neck by a string." Can you guess what he sells? No, he doesn´t sell candy, or flowers ... "On the tray, automatic frogs can jump up when you squeeze a rubber ball, spinning tops, soap, combs, shaving cream and tubes of shampoo. Curious, isn´t it? The frog have different meanings, depending on the culture. For some, it announces the arrival of the rain ... Does anyone here know about frogs?
